The 52-year-old Russian oligarch saw the value of his stocks rise by £587.2million, largely due to a 43 per cent rise in shares at the miner Evraz, of which he owns almost a third.

The top Briton was Tim Steiner, 49-year-old co-founder of the online grocer Ocado, whose share value nearly doubled this year, increasing his holding by £121.1million

At the other end of the scale, mining tycoon Ivan Glasenberg’s stake in his business Glencore fell by almost £1.3billion after a dismal year in which US officials began a corruption probe.
