Arsenal's back-up stopper Cech has played every round in the competition for the Gunners this season, despite being Leno's understudy in the Premier League.

Gunners boss Unai Emery is understood to be keeping faith with Cech for the final, despite rumors that he will be joining former club Chelsea as sporting director at the end of the season.

But Leno revealed he hopes to be chosen to start the final instead of his Czech teammate.

Speaking to Kicker, via Metro, Leno said: "I have great respect for Petr, and we get along very well.

"He deserves all credit, and I treat him well, but it’s clear that I’m an athlete, I want to always play, especially in a final."

Leno is yet to play in a European final, and victory on Wednesday would see the Gunners qualify for next season's Champions League.

He added: "To win the Europa League would be the first big title for me. We all want to hear the [Champions League] anthem again.
