Speculations have continued to swirl regarding the future of Maurizio Sarri, who has been linked with a return to Italy with Juventus.

According to The Times, ex-Spain boss Lopetegui has thrown his hat into the ring to take over at Stamford Bridge if the Italian departs.

The 52-year-old has been out of work since being sacked by Real Madrid after a miserable start to the season and he's now registered his interest in returning to the dugout in the Premier League

Club legend Frank Lampard remains favourite for the job amid reports the Blues are plotting a swoop for the Derby manager.

But Lopetegui is keen to offer them an alternative and give them something to think about if Sarri does leave after the Europa League final.

The Blues will take on Arsenal in Baku on Wednesday as they look to end their season with some major silverware.

Though they have already secured Champions League football having finished third in the Premier League table, it could still prove Sarri's final game in charge.

Lopetegui managed Porto from 2014 to 2016 before becoming Spain boss.

He took charge of the national side for two years before a dramatic departure on the eve of the World Cup when he took the Real Madrid role.

He remained with Los Blancos for just 14 matches before being sacked, with a 5-1 El Clasico defeat proving to be the final straw in October.
